My First One Mile Run!

Do you remember when you first started running?
When you first started running, it could have been days, months or years ago! For me, it has been 23 years! I was in middle school and we had Track and Field day. I did the high jump, the 50 yard dash and the long jump. Needless to say, jumping was not my thing but beating out all the kids in the 50 yard dash was the clincher!
Well, this past month I volunteered to raise money for our physical education program at my daughter's elementary school. Along with other great parents, we raised nearly 17,000 dollar this year alone. Not too shabby for a meatless economy!
Besides that, what was more interesting were the kids and their excitement to run that day! Now, let me tell you! It was drizzling, it was cold and there was no sun in site. These kids DID NOT CARE! They were doing something that they could not wait to do!
There was one kid that stood out for me. He was from one of the special needs classes and he had just finished his laps around the school. He came up to me pulling on my shirt, smiling with such proudness in his face. He had just completed a mile and could not believe how much fun it was for him. I looked down at his feet and he could not even walk like all the other kids. He was handicapped but finished a MILE!
As I have mentioned before in earlier blogs, we get so caught up in everyday situations and we can lose the excitement of the day. Working late hours, taking care of the kids and keeping up with the house, chores, bills and whatever else we tend to fall into. Just remember how running makes you feel whether it is tying up those shoe laces or finishing up the last 5 minutes of your run. Get your run in and feel like those kids felt when running their first lap around the school or completing their VERY FIRST mile because their friends pushed them to do so.
Do not get discouraged when it comes to training, running, or even day to day situations. It is too easy to give up but remember, hard work pays off!
Think about that kid that who had to wear special shoes, could barely walk like you or I and finished his first mile! If you can run, get out there and get the runn'n!
